Sunday was Mother’s Day, and like all churches should have, we celebrated mothers as a whole, and several specific ones from history. We learned about Sojourner Truth, and her speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” We learned about Jocabed, the mother of Moses, and her faith and determination that changed the world. And we learned about Oseola McCarty, who washed enough clothes and saved enough money to change the lives of students going to the school of Southern Mississippi for generations.
Mothers, and motherly women, have the power to shape lives, renew communities, and change the world for the better. Pastor Tish reminded us that it is a power we all hold: the power to trust God, the power to take risks, the power to defy the odds—as these three women did.
Next time someone tells you it cannot be done, or sets the odds against you intentionally, stop for a moment, and consider what a mother would say to you, a real mother, who puts you before herself, as God calls us all to do. Thank you mothers, for the way you shape and mold and launch and allow us to be so much more.
Reading for this Week: Exodus 2:2-10; Genesis 3:20; Luke 1: Exodus 6; 26; Timothy 6:8; Psalm 139; Psalm 146.
Quote for the week, from Pastor Tish, “If you’re only working in the possible real, you’ll never see a miracle.”
